IMPACT Self Defense Workshop
Saturday, May 12, 1:30-4:30 (Bancroft School)
This three-hour workshop gives you basic self-defense training in verbal and physical skills, and serves as a sample of what is offered in the full IMPACT Basics course (padded assailant, scenario-based training).  An excellent introduction to self-defense.

Cost:  $49   Open to women, men and older teens.   To enroll, make check to "DC IMPACT" for $49, and mail to 1716 Newton St NW, Washington DC, 20010-1822.  Enrollment is limited to first twenty applicants.

Notice to women: Those who take the above workshop may deduct  $49 from the cost of our next Women's Basics 25-hour course, which will meet five Saturdays from June 9 to July 7, 2:30-7:30pm, at Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington. Senshido’s “On The Cutting Edge” Seminar

Richrd Dimitri of the Senshido system is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on personal protection and reality-based self defense.  His programs and drills have been used by martial artists, law enforcement and civilians the world over.  His book, "In Total Defense of the Self,” is an international best seller.  He is also the developer of the well-known close quarter tool known as “The Shreddertm”, one of the most talked about innovations in modern self defense.  People travel to Montreal from all over the world to learn from this man.

The most common weapon used on the street is the knife and other forms of edged weapons such as a razor blade, screwdriver and/or broken beer bottle. You will learn drills to improve your close quarter arsenal against an armed attacker, including a safety stance and how to deal with static

National Women’s Martial Arts Federation Mid Atlantic Regional Training

Bo Basics & Application:

10-12:30

A six foot staff, the bo was used by peasants in Okinawa to carry bundles and water buckets.  It is also a formidable weapon.  Learn blocking and striking techniques, application of these techniques with a partner, and, if time, a mini-form.

If you have a bo, bring it.  Bos will be available for practicing and for purchase.  This workshop will be taught by Cassie Bosley, 2nd degree black belt in Ai Mute Shotokan Karate and assisted by Barbara Feldman 4th degree black belt, both from Blue Heron Martial and Healing Arts.

Self Defense for the 21st Century 2:00 – 4:30 pm

Learn a new and more effective paradigm for personal safety.  Taught by Carol Middleton and Angie Head of the DC Self Defense Karate Association, this new approach is born of 40 years experience in teaching verbal and physical skills, and real-life experiences of students that revealed what works best!  Learn the yin and yang of verbal strategy and physical technique to broaden your options and avoid danger.

Where: Blue Heron Martial and Healing Arts, 448 Southerly Lane, Charles Town, WV Directions: From Frederick, MD, take 340 towards Charles Town, WV About 4 miles after passing Harpers Ferry turn left into the Food Lion shopping center (across from Wal-Mart) and turn right onto the access road. Pass the BB&T Bank, bowling alley, and storage facility. Turn left on Keyes Ferry Road. Turn right at the first street: Southerly Lane. The address is 448. Come up the driveway and park on the grass on the left under the trees.

From Leesburg, take Route 7 south towards Berryville. About 4 miles past Leesburg, turn right onto Route 9. Take Route 9 North about 25 miles (passing through Hillsboro, VA). Stay on Route 9 (don’t go right to Harper’s Ferry Road). After crossing the Shenandoah, turn onto Route 9 / 340 North Harpers Ferry(I think it is a left turn). Get off on 340 North and turn right at the first light (Keyes Ferry Road). Follow the rest of the directions above.

DCSDKA's 30 Year Anniversary Celebration
Friday and Saturday, Oct 27-28, 2006
Performance and celebration on Friday, 6:30 pm (open to the public - Come hear from our students about our school and see an amazing array of martial arts, including performances from our youngest students, our teen group- the Peaceful Warriors, weapons, traditional katas as well as self-defense ).
Special classes with Grandmaster Hwang on Saturday, 10:15 - 11:45, for adult and children students with a white belt or higher.
Grandmaster Jack Hwang is Sensei Middleton’s first instructor and still teaches in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is President of the International Martial Arts Federation and is a 9th Dan in Taekwondo. Grandmaster Hwang began his martial arts training in Korea at a very young age. His martial arts training is diverse, having achieved proficiency in Kendo, Judo, Karate, Hapkido, and Taekwondo. He selected, formed, and directed the United States Taekwondo teams and their coaches for the First World Taekwondo Championship in South Korea. Sensei Middleton studied with Grandmaster Hwang from 1969 though 1971.

Aikido Seminar
Saturday, October 21 from 9-11:55am

Taught by Jim Sorrentino. Open to all adult students and children age 10 and over.

Jim Sorrentino holds a fifth-degree black belt in aikido. He began his martial training in Uechi-ryu Karate-do under Robert Galeone in 1977, and holds a third-degree black belt in that art as well. With Mr. Galeone's encouragement, Mr. Sorrentino began his study of aikido in 1984 under Mitsugi Saotome-sensei. Saotome-sensei was a disciple of O-Sensei for 15 years, and has trained in aikido since 1954. Mr. Sorrentino continues to study regularly under Saotome-sensei. He also was an instructor in the full-force self-defense program, DC IMPACT Self Defense for over five years.
