Karate
has given me the opportunity to discover and develop my physical skills. It’s
also enabled me to compensate for and adapt around weak areas. Outside of the
dojo, this is applicable, too. With the knowledge I have developed in Karate, I
have been able to recognize my strengths and weaknesses and use this awareness
to excel. -- Sesen, Black Belt
I have learned a lot from the input and encouragement of other students and the teachers as I progress in the martial arts. The diversity of the students and teachers really plays a role in shaping the development of a black belt because you get the feedback from very different and varying perspectives in a supportive environment that values respect, etiquette, and courtesy. -- Laura, Black Belt
In my 33 years studying martial arts I have never come across a school with a curriculum that so well balances traditional martial arts practice with real world skills. And I don't mean fighting skills, but the skills of civil discourse and conflict resolution that can help any person get through their day and their life in a more productive and healthy way. A big part of this is the strength and supportive nature of the community within the school. In the case of my child, the positive atmosphere that prevails and the support and encouragement from his peers exceeds what he gets anywhere else in his life. Naturally, he loves coming to class and he loves everything he learns there, from how to throw a round kick to the right way to speak to his teachers and friends at school. -- James, father of 8 year old
Karate
has really helped my confidence. When I was little I was very shy. My karate
experience definitely helped me conquer my shyness. Now I can carry on a decent
conversation with someone I’ve just met. I now have the confidence to try
something new, and trust that I will achieve my goals, however big or small. --

Taking
karate has been great for my mind, body, and spirit! Sensei Middleton is
dynamic, knowledgeable, and motivating and everyone in the dojang, from the
smallest children to the adult black belts, cultivate an atmosphere of
encouragement, respect, and sharing. I have made many new friends whom I look
forward to seeing every week! -- Todd,

“My boys need a regular, disciplined, physical activity that emphasizes
self control. They get it at DCSDKA. My kids are extremely wary of
what we would see as kind, verbal encouragement but they see as “false
praise.” There is no false praise in karate so their sense of
accomplishment is solid. They get off on that. And, I appreciate the emphasis on respect and safety. --Daisy, mother of 6 and 8 year old
What I like about the school is the
balance I find there; a balance of assertiveness and thoughtfulness, a balance
of strength and skill and a balance of self introspection and awareness of
others. My boys enjoy their time there and find it very useful. I see them
being more focused and aware of their ability to accomplish something. They are
proud of their accomplishments at karate. -- John, father of 8 and 10 year old
